Past Updates

October 31, 2010

Boyer Farm is closed for the season. Thanks to all of our customers for giving us another great year! See you in the spring! I'll work on adding more features to the website throughout the winter.

September 6, 2010

We're close to finished with our peaches, only about a week or two remains, so get them while they last! We're beginning to finish a lot of our summer crops, and will soon start some of our fall produce. We already have a few apples; sweet potatoes and pumpkins are next!

September 27, 2010

The peaches are finished for the year, as are watermelons and cantalopes. Fortunately, we are finished digging sweet potatoes, and have apples for sale at the stand. We are also picking tomatoes, and a bit of corn. We also have mums for sale for some fall color to the garden!

The peaches are moving in full swing now, We are steadily picking our Lorings, and are picking a few Redskins and Cresthavens, all of which are perennial favorites. We also have plenty of sweet nectarines, and a few Italian Prune plums. Be sure to stop in before the summer is over!

July 29, 2010

We have been picking lots of peaches and are moving quickly through varieties. All of our peaches are now free-stone, which makes them great for cooking. We also have watermelons ready, and plenty of ripe, and green, tomatoes.

July 12, 2010

The rain has finally cut down the heat, and our later peaches are starting to get bigger. We have been picking our own white sweet corn for about a week now, as well as plenty of cantalopes. Potatoes are also starting to come in as well. Our Metheney plums are finished, but now we have yellow Shiroh plums. Stop in soon!

July 2, 2010

Another dry week, but we have been very busy picking. We now have our own cantalopes, which are much sweeter than ones from the Eastern Shore. Check for our own white sweet corn on Sunday or Monday. Also be sure to try the white peaches and Metheny plums!

June 26, 2010

It's been a busy couple of weeks here on the farm. We have been busy thinning peaches, hoeing fields and of course, irrigating the crops. The hard work is paying off though, as the stand is now open with fresh peaches. We also have some summer hanging baskets for sale, so be sure to stop on by.More pictures will be added soon as well.

Late May means ripe strawberries and in-season rhubarb--brightly colored fruits that complement Memorial Day's patriotic BBQ feasts. Welcome the summer with a home-made Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie, incorporating the fresh Eastern-shore strawberries that Boyer Farms has been selling this month. Rhubarb's peak harvest is right now, and you can find it well-stocked at local grocers or farmer's markets. Be sure to pick-up some of the just-picked strawberries currently featured at Boyer Farms, selling for $4 per quart, or 2 for $7.50.

Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie

1. Adjust oven rack to the lowest position, place a rimmed baking sheet on the rack, preheat over to 500 degrees. Press bottom crust into 9-inch pie plate.

2. Heat the oil in a skillet over medium high heat. Add the rhubarb and 1/4 c. of the sugar. Cook, stirring frequently, until the rhubarb has lost most of its liquid but is still firm, about 5 min. Spread the cooked rhubarb out over large plate and refrigerate until cool.

3. Toss the cooled rhubarb, strawberries, lemon juice, and vanilla together. Sprinkle sugar and cornstarch over the fruit and toss thoroughly. *Taste the fruit and adjust the sugar and lemon juice to your liking. If a tart flavor is preferred, only use 1/2 to 3/4 c. sugar. For a sweeter taste, use 1 to 1 1/4 c. Spread the fruit in unbaked pie crust bottom.

4. Lay the top crust over fruit (if you're making two-crust pie), and seal edges with fingers. Cut slits to make vents. Brush crust with egg white, and sprinkle with extra sugar.

5. Place the pie on heated baking sheet and lower the over temperature to 425 degrees. Bake until the top crust is golden, about 25 min. Rotate baking sheet, reduce temperature again to 375 degrees and continue to bake until juices are bubbling and crust is deep golden brown, 30 to 35 min longer. Let cool before serving.

We've had a busy two weeks! The stand is still well stocked, and our 12" baskets are now on sale for $20. Get them while they last! We have also been taking care of our tomatoes, staking and stringing them to keep the tomatoes off the ground. We have also started thinnig. Check back soon for more info on this exciting part of peach growing.

The peach blooms didn't last long, those warm days last week really sped them up. The trees are now putting out leaves, and look nice and green. Most of the fields are plowed, and we are laying plastic in preparation for crops. We are also finished planting in the greenhouses, and just in time. We are planning to open the stand on Wednesday April 21, so stop by and get some flowers!

Whew! This week we finished pruning most of the peach trees, and once the rain started, we filled up a few greenhouses with new plants. A list of plants for sale in 4" cups has been added to the "Spring Flowers" section. Time to start planning gardens!

March 6, 2010

Added a new section to the menu "Around the Farm". Look here for tips on how to grow plants. In the coming week, we will be getting loads of plugs in to transplant, so look for some pictures, as well as the beginning of a product list.

February 26, 2010

Finally fixed the menu for Internet Explorer users, now you can actually access the pages I've made! The plants inside the greenhouses are really taking off! Hopefully this weekend, I'll finish more of the features for the spring, and add some pictures.

February 21, 2010

The snow is finally melting, and some plants have been started in the greenhouses. More features will be added regularly as different plants enter the greenhouses, and I can get pictures. Only around 2 more months until the stand opens for spring!
